Transmission
Tremec T-56 six speed transmission out of a 2005 Dodge Viper. I used a custom adapter plate to mount the T-56 to the Buick bell housing. This transmission feels so much better then the T5. The shift movement using the same B&M shifter feels more responsive and the quality seams better. Sixth gear is useless below 75mph but for cursing down the interstate at 80 is great. The T-56 weighs more and is much larger then the T5 but I wanted to see if I could fit it, and I did. I am using BG Syncro Shift® II with the BG MGC® Multi-Gear Concentrate in the T-56 instead of the special Mopar fluid.
(My old transmission but still the
most practical so I didn't want to remove the information) Borg Warner
T5 5-speed
Overdrive ratio is .73. With the 3.07 rear end. Filled with ATF.
This T5 came from a 92 Trans Am. The bell housing was made buy Trans Adapt
and I found it new on Ebay. Since I was using an Automatic Rover V8, the
input shaft would not slide as far into the crank as it would a manual crank.
I had to make some aluminum spacers to bridge the gap. This was
advantageous because it placed my shifter right in the same place the original
MGB shifter protruded. The engine turns 2000 at 70 MPH in fifth gear.
(note: I started using
BG Syncro Shift® II
with the
BG MGC®
Multi-Gear Concentrate and it
made this transmission preformed 100% better.)
Drive shaft Custom-made, heavy duty steel driveshaft.
Clutch Standard Chevy clutch. 9 11/16" Clutch and a 10 1/2" long style pressure plate. Standard 3/4" MGB master cylinder. The Throughout bearing is hydraulic made by Quarter Master P/N 720100. It is a great design and very high quality. I bought it from the Car Shop online. I had to use a 3/16" brake line to join the hydraulic bearing to the master cylinder. The stock 1/4 line was to large.
Flywheel The flywheel was a light Billet steel unit made buy Weber Performance and bought from D&D Fab. The engine revs freely and has better response.
Mounting Used the standard MGB rear mount cross member. I cut all the bits off of it and just drilled a slot so I could have a little adjustment if needed. I used the stock GM mount.
